Newborn-2 Years
Newborn-2 Years
So many exciting changes happen during your baby’s first two years, including teething.
- Teething can start anywhere between 3 and 12 months. Common symptoms include fussiness, drooling, and swollen gums..
- Remedies like teething rings, Orajel, or age-appropriate pain relievers (like Tylenol or Motrin) can help ease discomfort.
- The lower front teeth are usually the first to come through.
Dental Milestone: The first dental visit should happen by age 1 or when the first tooth comes in.
3-5 Years
3-5 Years
By the time your child is 3 years old, all 20 primary teeth should be in place. These baby teeth are vital for chewing, jaw development, and holding space for permanent teeth.
- Take special care of these teeth as they’ll be part of your child’s health for years to come.
- Adult brushing and flossing supervision are essential until your child develops the skill to do it independently.
Dental Tip: If your water source is from a well, a fluoride supplement may be necessary.
6-11 Years
6-11 Years
This age brings some big changes, like visits from the Tooth Fairy and the arrival of 6-year molars.
- Most children lose their first tooth—a lower front one—between ages 6 and 7 (but anywhere from 4 to 8 is normal).
- Watch for 6-year molars coming in behind the baby teeth; they’ll need brushing farther back in the mouth.
Dental Tip: Once these molars are fully erupted, we can add a sealant to protect them from cavities.
12 Years and Beyond
12 Years and Beyond
As your child enters their teenage years, more permanent teeth will arrive, including the 12-year molars.
- These teeth need diligent brushing and flossing, as well as sealants once fully erupted.
- If orthodontics is needed, these are the years when most children will begin braces.
- Wisdom teeth often appear during the late teen years and may need to be removed.
